In Christ’s famous Sermon on the Mount, he gave a command that shook his audience to the core:“If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two.”
To understand why this was so radical, you need the context. At the time, Roman soldiers had the legal right to force Jewish citizens to carry their equipment. But the Roman Senate, trying to curb abuse, passed a law limiting it to one mile. People hated this practice—it was humiliating, demeaning, and a reminder of being under Roman rule.
So when Christ said, “Go with him two,” the crowd was outraged. Why would anyone do MORE for their oppressor? Why not resist? Why not stop at the mile marker?
But here’s the brilliance: that “second mile” wasn’t about Roman soldiers. It was about you. About who you are becoming. About choosing to rise above what’s required and turning service into a powerful statement of character, generosity, and leadership.
Fast forward a few hundred years: Christianity itself became the official religion of Rome. What started as an outrageous call to radical service changed the entire course of history.
